Stop Overthinking your Website

We’ve all been there: twenty browser tabs open, three half-finished wireframes, and a portfolio that’s still not ready yet. In the graphic design field, where we obsess over every detail, it is easy to let the perfect be the enemy of the finished. Building a professional site doesn't require reinventing the wheel.

For graphic designers, a website portfolio is a must have, the days of printed portfolios has long passed as the digital presentation of design work is the new norm. Myself and peers alike spend too much time and effort obsessing over every little detail, trying to perfect our portfolio to land a job or internship. Perfection often times kills creativity. Endlessly chasing perfection only will set you back,  so let's go over some tips to let your creativity free and putting that finishing touch on your portfolio.

The main purpose of you portfolio is to show your design work and personality for potential employers and career opportunities. With that being said, the focal point of your site should be your selected works / best projects. This is where we want the viewer to spend the most time, so that they are able to get a feel for your design philosophy and skills. Another very important section of your portfolio is your about section. With a website portfolio, 90% of the time it is being viewed without you around, unlike a printed portfolio where you can walk the viewer through it. This creates a slight disconnect, but don't worry there are still many ways to express your personality without direct interaction. That being through your about section. Be free, be casual, and have fun with this portion of the portfolio design process. Share unrelated design information about yourself, your hobbies, interests, etc. The about section serves as a window into the personality of the designer, employers are not looking for robots! Don't use AI for this portion, you are not a perfect machine, but a human, express your true and unique self.
